Are we fashionably cascading into a black hole?

My acceptance into this fashion show propelled me into a deep exploration of black hole science and the mythologies that surround it. I became particularly influenced by an interview with Nobel Prize–winning astrophysicist Andrea M. Ghez (Physics, 2020), whose discovery of the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way—Sagittarius A*—was made possible by tracking the orbits of stars that dance around it. Ghez’s palpable affection for this enigmatic cosmic phenomenon fundamentally shifted my own perspective.

Equally influential were the words of our inspiration artist, Nina Elder. Her description of black holes as “warmly inviting” and her assertion that, “I feel an urgent imperative to create personal, accessible spaces,” offered a conceptual framework that shaped my creative direction.

These ideas raise pressing questions: Are we fashionably cascading toward the end of our planet? Will we become refugees of our own world? Could black holes, paradoxically, emerge as “warmly inviting” realms of possibility and hope? And what does it truly mean to create a personal, accessible space—either here or beyond?

My collection, Rising Sun, seeks to explore these tensions and imaginings: destruction and refuge, collapse and renewal, darkness and illumination. Through this work, I invite viewers to journey with me into the unknown.
