I designed a 10 piece collection for GOCA’s Stardust. It is very much inspired by the theme of starts and constellation, the galaxy and the unknown. While so vast, dark and mysterious, it feels organized and connected. Keeping all this in mind, and personally relating to the artist Nina Elder’s work and words, my collection will tell a story from beginning to end. The first piece in the collection represents the universe, the dark and vast sparkling outer space. Big sequin letters on the back of the coat spell out “WE ARE HERE.” With a tiny dot. The collection continues inspired by Nina Elders “black holes and voids.” Subsequent pieces represent a star or a presence or being yearning for life on earth, a fallen star on earth, life on earth and it’s beautiful colors, the darkness that comes with not being aligned and connected with ourselves and each other. I want to include ruffles and more dark textures representing fear, struggles and shedding Inspired by Nina’s “accumulations” and “ruffles.” I related to her speaking on girls and women’s struggles to conform to norms and attempting to fit in being forces of nature. After overcoming feelings of loss and grief and uncertainty of the unknown and life after death we realize there is something more and hope for peace. The closing piece will have big sequin letters with the words “WE ARE ONE” because experiencing life on earth we realize the greatest most meaningful things are achieved together and our differences give us purpose. And moving with purpose we can achieve great things making our future and the unknown less scary.
