For Freedoms

Founded in 2016 by artists Hank Willis Thomas, Eric Gottesman, Michelle Woo, and Wyatt Gallery, this organization has now collaborated with more than 1,000 artists on more than 750 activations in the United States. By utilizing art to initiate discourse on politics and social issues as well as to encourage nonpartisan civic participation, For Freedoms maintains that with creativity as a societal value, we can generate new ideas and build systems centered around love and community.

How To Participate:

This interactive project was among the first For Freedoms activations, inviting participants to define freedom in their own words. The language draws from FDR’s Four Freedoms, later depicted by Norman Rockwell, but opens up limitless expansion for the inclusion of all people.

Stop by the GOCA Lobby at the Ent Center for the Arts to fill out a yard sign. Signs and sharpies are provided.

The rules are simple:

  • Select a sign that is most meaningful to you.

  • Complete the sentence with one word or a very short phrase.

  • Display your paper sign in a window of your home, office, or anywhere you want to share your vision of freedom.

  • Return your lawn sign to the activity attendant for inclusion in a public art installation at the Ent Center for the Arts.

What is not allowed:

  • Endorsement of a specific candidate, party, or ballot issue.

  • Hate speech of any kind or any language that can be perceived as discriminatory toward an individual or group.

Thank you for being a collaborator in this community-wide effort! Together, we can move the needle toward a more just, equitable tomorrow.
